the development of chemical industry promotes human and social progress while objectively producing environmental pollution and material waste. the chemical industry has a large volume scale and a wide range of industrial chain. it is also under great pressure in terms of green emission reduction. "green chemical" becomes the target of the whole industry chain sustainable development of chemical industry.

according to a national survey conducted by the chemical industrial park working committee of china petroleum and chemical industry federation (cpcif), by the end of 2014, there were 381 key chemical industrial parks in china mostly consist of companies from the petroleum & chemical industries. compared with other types of parks, industrial parks can easily bring harm to ecosystem. then, how to set a standard of "green industrial park"for a large number of them in china?
dr. klaus schäfer, chief technology officer at covestro, told the reporter that, “the concept of ‘chemical industrial park’ itself is already very sustainable, which enables the recycle of products, byproducts and even wastes. the development of highly integrated industry parks will definitely make them even more environment-friendly.”
another advantage of modern chemical industrial park is using centralized facilities to deal with waste water, waste gas and waste residues with a higher efficiency than those scattered in different locations.

expanding the application areas of innovative material solutions
dr. klaus schäfer told the reporter that, at present, covestro’s innovation mainly focuses on products and technologies. through constantly crossing limits of possibility, they hope to mitigate the negative impact brought to the environment and benefit the whole society. therefore, covestro has established one of its three innovation hubs in the world - polymer research and development center (prdc) in shanghai.
covestro provides material solutions for industries including automobile, electricals and construction, etc. the materials and technologies it developed for these industries are able to help emission reduction in future. one of its recent breakthroughs is the transformation of greenhouse gas carbon dioxide into raw materials for plastic. this technology enables carbon dioxide to replace as high as 20% fossil fuels and has already been used to make soft polyurethane foam for mattresses and upholstered furniture. for this covestro has established a new brand called cardyon®.
in addition, covestro also developed waterborne polyurethane coatings. compared with coatings based on conventional solvent system, they can greatly reduce the voc content of coatings. this technology has already been applied in locomotives, exterior building walls, engineering machinery and other fields.
the new materials of covestro are also used in clean energy technologies. covestro has successfully produced asia's first polyurethane wind turbine blade. the 37.5 meter-long rotor blade, which is designed for a wind turbine with an output of 1.5 megawatts, enables higher energy efficiency, longer durability yet lower production cost.
accelerating the upgrade of the chemical industry
over the last 15 years, china’s chemical and energy sectors have been seeing great growth with fast-growing markets. china now is accelerating the integration of chemical companies into industry parks so as to promote the cleaner production process and sustain surrounding environment.
dr. klaus schäfer told the reporter that energy supply, especially natural gas and electricity, is a key to the establishment of chinese chemical industry’s sustainable future. there are three directions need attention: centralizing chemical companies; reducing carbon footprint during supplying them as well as lowering their supply cost.
